Gentlemen and Brothers in Christ:
I am confused about some teachings at Church. We are beginning a new Bible Study this Fall…except it isn’t from the Bible. It is based on a book by Joyce Meyer, Battlefield of the Mind. My concern is: 1) Even though a man is teaching the class, he is using a book written by a woman (whom I believe to be not walking as she should). Doesn’t that fall under a woman usurping a man’s authority? And 2) Why would a Bible Study not be from the Word of God? Why do people feel like they need something other than the Word? I really don’t want to “start” something and I don’t know who to ask. I have questions about our Elders being qualified to serve so I’m at a loss.
I look forward to your advice.
In Christian Love,
Coral

Hi Coral,
These postings on our site will answer your question about Joyce Meyer and women teaching in the Body of Christ:
Meyer, Joyce: Segment in “What Kind of Faith Do You Have?”
Diabolical Doctrines: Women Are Ministers of God in Spiritual Authority over Men
As for the technicality of discussing a book on spiritual matters found in the Scriptures as a “Bible study,” that’s not really an issue. The issue is whether the book is in harmony with the Bible, coming from the same Spirit of Truth Who inspired its writing, testifying of Jesus Christ. We know that’s the case with our website, for example, but not with Joyce Meyer’s book.
Now you need to consider why your elders are blind to these things, Coral, and what you need to do about it.
“But He answered and said, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up. Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch” (Matthew 15:13-14 MKJV).
