“We Are Fools for Christ’s Sake, But You Are Wise…”

The local Helena paper posted this letter to the editor:

Too broad a brush

In response to D.W. Miller’s letter June 13, which attacks scientists as godless people, I say: Don’t paint us all with the same brush, sir! In my many years as a scientist, I have taught junior high, high school, and college. I have taught biology, chemistry, and physics. When I taught biology, I taught evolution as part of it. And I am church-going woman with unshakable faith in God. So don’t paint us all with the same brush. A good scientist knows that we don’t know everything. A good scientist is filled with wonder at the beauty and intricacy of the world. Personally, when I see the beauty and intricacy of the world, I am filled with awe and praise for the Maker.

Paul’s reply to Beth:

Hi Beth,

I red your letter to the editor and have some things to say in reply. These things will be critical of the belief in evolution, though I hope you will understand that I am not in agreement with Mr. Miller’s stance, at least from what you had to say about it (I did not see his letter). His assertion, that scientists are godless people, is just plain silly. Scientists are no more ungodly than bakers, butchers, or candlestick makers. There is nothing inherently ungodly about those who study, teach, or are interested in science. As you say, the beauty and intricacy of creation is a wonder to behold, and these may fill one with awe of the Maker.

However, when it comes to evolution, a more godless and foolish notion could not exist. It is provably not even science; it is pseudo-science; it is a religious faith akin to witchcraft and magic, which exists to absolve man of responsibility to his Maker.

Presenting your support for evolution as evidence of the existence of godly scientists is like presenting Iran’s support for nuclear weapons as evidence of the existence of peaceful Muslims. It does not fly. And it will never evolve to grow wings and take to the air like a bird.

If you know you don’t know everything, as you claim none do, then you should not be venturing opinions on something you know nothing about, much less publicly. Unless I presume too much, and you actually do know how to make a properly functioning cell that can sustain itself and propagate. Of course, that presupposes you could actually create the environment that would support this cell. Could you then use that cell to create multi-cellular organisms and higher life forms that live in harmony with each other, interdependent and together creating a biosphere that functions as a single entity?

Have you not realized, as a scientist, that the beautiful intricacy you admire cannot work without the many parts functioning together? How do random mutations accomplish that?

Of course they do not, no more than randomly pushing keys will compose a coherent letter addressing these matters.

If you do not understand how creation happened, not being capable of forming it yourself, is it not presumptuous and arrogant of you to have such a high opinion of your knowledge? Have you not heard what God said to Job?

“Who is this who makes the purpose of God dark by words without knowledge? Get your strength together like a man of war; I will put questions to you, and you will give Me the answers. Where were you when I put the earth on its base? Say, if you have knowledge” (Job 38:2-4 BBE).

Read the rest of what God said to Job.

How can you claim to have unshakable faith in God, yet believe atheistic theorists who deny the Creator, and who plainly contradict the Record He has provided by godly souls in the Bible? If God rested on the seventh day, and gave us every seventh day thereafter – the Sabbath – to rest, then how are the other days of the week representative of millions of years? If the Sabbath is but one day, are not the others – evening and morning – each day? If you answer that the Sabbath is millions of years, like the other days, are you suggesting evolution stopped after man came into being? It would have had to because it is recorded that God ceased from His works on the seventh day. But that is contrary to what evolutionists propose. According to them, creation marches on, making new creatures through the evolutionary process, continuously, inexorably, without ceasing. It is all manifest foolishness, madness, and confusion because contrary to God and His ways.

Of course, to the confused and foolish it is not so manifest, but that is why God sends His servants to speak His Word and bring Light.

The position you take as a Christian defending the theory of foolish men, as though anyone doing otherwise is ignorant, reminds me of the apostle Paul’s contrast of those serving Christ with those taking His Name while winning acclaim with the world:

“We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are honorable, but we are despised” (1 Corinthians 4:10 MKJV).

Giving comfort and support to man’s cleverness, which is used with wicked intention (even if unbeknownst to men, it does not matter), is not good. Going to church is not where it is at, either. Here is where it is at:

“For thus says the high and lofty One Who inhabits eternity, Whose Name is holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite” (Isaiah 57:15 HNV).

Amen.
